The Fourth of July is a beloved holiday in the United States of America. Although some may protest what’s going on these days, there is one thing on which we can all agree: we are happy to live in a society where we have the right and freedom to discuss where we should go from here. In some societies, the people don’t have the ability to discuss public happenings let alone take a stand on them. That’s what makes the USA special – On the Fourth of July, we take a moment to recognize these benefits.
In the United States, people rely on their values. We believe in respect. Respect is a two-way street, they say. That means we should “follow the golden rule.” In other words, we should treat others how we want to be treated. Makes sense! We also treasure our liberty and freedom. When we talk about opportunity in the US, we believe that every person, no matter where they’re from or who they are, has the chance to succeed.
Unfortunately, sometimes criminals take advantage of holidays when people are more vulnerable. In the land of plenty, some people are still driven to steal and vandalize property.
Vacations at the Lake
One popular pastime for the Fourth of July is to enjoy a weekend get-away at your favorite spot on the lake. Wherever that special spot is, you need to think about security along the way. For example, how are you leaving behind your permanent residence? Hopefully armed with a burglar alarm system in Key Biscayne and CCTV (Closed-circuit Television). If not, you could be inviting criminals into your home, especially if it is clear you’re not going to be around on the Fourth. A pile of mail and dried up plants can be a clue to criminals that you’ve gone fishing at the lake for the weekend. What an opportune time to strike!
If you own a lake house, we ask you this: How are you protecting it when you’re not there? Hoping for the best? A “beware of dog” sign? Counting on a nosey neighbor to call the cops should a suspicious character show up poking around? It’s certainly a better idea to invest in security equipment.
Fireworks: The Prefect Distraction
If your town has fireworks, be careful. While everybody’s attention is turned to the skies, criminals take advantage of the fanfare to sneak into houses and businesses to steal. A patriotic fireworks show makes it harder to hear broken glass, getaway vans, and gun shots. On the Fourth of July, people assume loud noises are just neighbors blowing off fireworks. When the sun comes up, the damage is revealed.
